Ernest John Cooper was born in Elveden (Mildenhall Q4-1899 4A:871), son of Albert Ernest and Ellen COOPER (née WINDWORD).

1901 census...Aged 1, John was at Old Elveden with his father Albert Ernest COOPER [27] horsekeeper born Elveden; his mother Ellen [36] born Eriswell and sisters Blanche [3] and Annie [6 months] both born in Elveden.

1911 census...Aged 11, (now Ernest John) he was at Chalk Farm, Elveden with his parents; sisters Blanche May and Annie and brother Cecil Charles [3] born in Elveden.



He enlisted in Ipswich.
Battalion War Diary:-
"N of Achiet le Petit sheet 57c- 23/8/18- 1:30 am: Battn in postiion with 4th BEDFORD REGT. A certain amount of difficulty was experienced owing to lack of accommodation.
9 am- Operation orders were received from the 112 Inf Bde. A conference of Coy.Commander was immediately called and order No 202 issued.
11 am- Attack commenced.
12:45 pm Objective gained and consolidated. T/Lt(A/Capt) J Marguard -killed. 2/Lt H.Kirk DCM, CE Vickers MM, AA Allen MC, HH Taylor, PR Mills wounded Battn HW established at G.16.a.1.8.
SE of Achiet le Grande - 5:5 pm - Orders received for further advance and order No 203 issued.
5:30pm The second attack commenced but the barrage being put down 700 yards in front of position no headway was made.
6:15 pm- The battn returned to its original objective. 2/Lt A McCarthy killed. During the evening the 8th Bn Somerest LI passed through the battn and occupied trench running from G.16.d.48.72 to G.17.a.3.5.
